Carpel Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a common condition that affects the hand and wrist. It occurs due to pressure on the median nerve as it passes through the narrow passageway called the carpal tunnel in the wrist. Let’s explore the details:

  1. Symptoms:

    • Numbness and Tingling: You may experience numbness, tingling, or a pins-and-needles sensation in the thumb, index finger, middle finger, and part of the ring finger.

    • Pain and Discomfort: Pain can radiate from the wrist up the arm. It often worsens at night.

    • Weakness: Reduced grip strength and difficulty holding objects.

    • Clumsiness: A tendency to drop things due to weakened hand muscles.

  2. Causes and Risk Factors:

    • Pressure on the Median Nerve: The carpal tunnel becomes narrowed or inflamed, compressing the median nerve.

    • Risk Factors:

      • Repetitive Hand Movements: Activities like typing, sewing, or using vibrating tools.

      • Anatomy: Some people have a smaller carpal tunnel.

      • Health Conditions: Diabetes, obesity, hypothyroidism, and rheumatoid arthritis.

      • Gender: CTS is more common in women.

      • Pregnancy: Hormonal changes can lead to fluid retention and increased pressure in the carpal tunnel.

  3. Diagnosis and Treatment:

    • Clinical Evaluation: Based on symptoms and physical examination.

    • Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS): Measures nerve function.

    • Electromyography (EMG): Assesses muscle activity.

    • Treatment Options:

      • Conservative Measures:

        • Wrist Splints: Worn at night to keep the wrist in a neutral position.

        • Anti-Inflammatory Medications: Reduce swelling and pain.

        • Physical Therapy: Exercises to improve wrist strength and flexibility.

      • Corticosteroid Injections: Reduce inflammation.

      • Surgery (Carpal Tunnel Release):

        • Open Surgery: The surgeon cuts the ligament to relieve pressure on the nerve.

        • Endoscopic Surgery: A minimally invasive procedure using a small camera.

  4. Prevention and Self-Care:

    • Ergonomics: Maintain proper wrist posture during work.

    • Frequent Breaks: Rest and stretch your hands.

    • Avoid Repetitive Motions: Modify activities if possible.
